MOTS-c (Mitochondrial ORF of the twelve S rRNA type-c) is a 16-amino-acid peptide encoded not in the nuclear genome but within the mitochondrial 12S rRNA gene. Its discovery established a class of mitochondrial-derived peptides that act as signalling molecules, and it remains the most studied member of that class.
Research Applications
Research applications include AMPK pathway activation assays, mitochondrial and nuclear crosstalk studies, glucose uptake and insulin sensitivity models, skeletal muscle metabolism research, and exercise and cellular ageing models conducted in vitro and in animal models.
